Petersburg Loop 1 - Part B

2 days / 65 miles / 2 hours 20 minutes

Beginning at the summit of Spruce Knob, descend to Rt 33 and turn left (north) just a couple of miles to Riverton. Turn right on Germany Valley Road. Just after the small bridge in town, stop and check out the memorial to early soldiers at the Battle Of Riverton. Just another mile on the right, you will see a very small sign for Horse Ridge Road. Follow this narrow (but moderately coarse paved) road up the steep hill. As the road levels off at the cemetery, find a safe place to stop and look back at the scenic rock formation. Continue another mile or two until the road splits. If you have time, take a detour left on Horse Ridge Road about 2 or 3 miles to a historical marker for John Dahles Grave. He is the namesake for Dolly Sods. You can climb the hill about 200 yards to the treeline and see the cemetery and find his grave. Returning to the previous intersection, continue east on Bland Hill Road for several miles until you come out on Rt 33. Turn left (east) towards Franklin. As you reach the summit (after some very fun curves!), watch for a blind turnout to the left for Germany Valley. This is one of the finest overlooks in WV. Continue to Franklin. Stop for gas at Franklin unless you have enough for about 50 miles. Continue north on Rt 220 through Upper Tract and about 2 miles north. At a bridge, look for Smoke Hole Road to the left. Follow this along the river about 5 miles to the general store. Turn left, go about 1/4 mile, and turn right to continue on Smoke Hole Road towards Cabins. TAKE YOUR TIME! This is a well paved, but narrow and twisty road with a 35MPH limit. Lots of blind corners and oncoming traffic. Lots of families with kids during the summer. After about 15 miles, turn right on Rt 28 and return to Petersburg.
