A relaxing place to visit, the Old Fort House features substantial grounds, gardens and outbuildings. The campus has five buildings, including a tollhouse, law office, and schoolhouse. Now, the Old Fort House contains authentic furnishings depicting the lives of the occupants from the 1800s through the 1940s. The main house was built by Patrick Smyth in 1772 using timbers taken from the ruins of the fortifications at Ft. Edward. The house served as a headquarters for both British and American Generals during the Revolution. General Washington dined here on two different occasions in 1783.

Waterford's Canal Harbor Welcome Center
A new interpretive sign indicates the junction of New York's three major heritage corridors - the Hudson River National Heritage Corridor, the Mohawk Valley Heritage Corridor, and the Lakes to Locks Passage. All three corridors merge at this location within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. From Waterford to Whitehall, the Champlain Canal provides sixty-three miles of scenic boating - plus waterfront picnic parks and trails-- at eleven lock locations and numerous canal towns. The City of Waterford is the gateway to the south along the Hudson River to New York City, the west along the Erie Canal and Mohawk River, and the north along the Champlain Canal and upper Hudson River. Heading north from Lock C1 to C7, the Champlain Canal is a marked channel within the Hudson River, with man-made channels and locks to bypass the rapids and dams.
